Process to Build a Handrail for Metal Balusters


  1. Measure and Cut the Rail:

    • Measure the handrail length from post to post on a straight run and cut it to fit. Ensure your rail is positioned at the appropriate height on the posts (usually ¼-½" down from the top of the post).

    • Confirm that both posts are plumb and that the rail is level along its length, with no visible gaps between the rail and posts.

  2. Install the Rail:

    • Carefully place the handrail in position and nail it to the posts with a pin gun on the top and bottom.

    • Predrill with a ⅛" bit on the bottom side of the handrail and insert a secure 4" screw to hold it firmly. Use a 200-lb standoff to ensure the rail won’t pull away from the posts.

  3. Join Sections of Rail:

    • If the rail continues past one section, ensure tight joints between sections. Apply glue and add pins as necessary to secure the connections.

  4. Calculate and Mark Spacing for Spindles:

    • Measure the distance from one post to the other, then use the following process for spacing:

      • Take your measurement (e.g., 52 ½") and divide it by 4 to get your initial spacing (13.125" for 13 spindles).

      • Adjust for center spacing as needed. If this spacing isn’t sufficient, add spindles in even increments, keeping a consistent pattern.

    • Use a pencil or chalk to mark each spindle’s center position along the handrail on the floor for easy alignment.

  5. Transfer Marks and Drill:

    • Once marked, transfer your measurements to the handrail itself, ensuring they align correctly.

    • Drill into the bottom of the handrail with a ½" spade bit for the spindles, taking care not to drill through the handrail.

    • Drill into the floor with a ¾" spade bit to a depth of at least ½" at the bottom and ¾" at the top to hold the spindles securely.

  6. Install Spindles:

    • Position each spindle into its drilled slot, ensuring it’s plumb and securely fixed.

    • Ensure spacing is consistent and aligned, with spindles securely held in both the rail and floor.

Reporting

For reporting purposes, count the number of balusters installed per section. This count will be recorded and submitted as part of the production report for this task.
